What horse supplements do you need?
Thursday, December 1st, 2011Horse supplements can be a real tricky thing to understand and on top of this they can be darn expensive. Horse supplements are brilliant but a few too many people pump their horses up with horse supplements which just aren’t needed. Don’t spend anymore money than you need to so really sit down and think about horse nutrition before you think about buying anything. Is it summer or winter? If it’s summer your horse will be getting pretty much everything it needs from the grass in regards to vitamins and minerals. If you still need to think about horse nutrition and bucket feeds in the summer it’s due to your horses being underweight or having to be fed due to excessive work. If it’s winter your horse may be struggling to get it’s vitamins and minerals as the grass has stopped growing. Think about what’s best for your horse nutrition wise and only purchase what’s needed.
Horse supplements and horse nutrition feeds which are aimed at horses that compete really should only be fed to horse going out eventing two or three times a week. I compete heavily and go out every weekend to do dressage or showjumping but I don’t feed these supplements as they’d send my horses over the edge. Unless they are in very heavy work avoid these.
